In 1835 John Tooth, who had arrived in New South Wales in 1828, and Charles Newnham opened the Kent Brewery in Sydney. In June 1888 Tooth & Company became a publicly listed company with capital of 900,000 pounds. In 1905 the Company acquired the New South Wales Malting Company's works at Mittagong. Over the next two decades the company acquired the Maitland Brewery (1913), the Castlemaine Brewery and Wood Brothers, Newcastle (1921); breweries in Wagga Wagga, Narrandera and Goulburn and in 1929 they acquired Resch's Limited. In 1977 the company acquired Wright, Heaton and Company and Penfolds Wines Limited and in 1978 Courage Brewery Limited. Tooth and Company was acquired by Carlton and United Breweries in 1983. The company's extensive collection of hotel properties were sold off from 1990. The company was delisted from the Australian Securities Exchange in 2010 after not having traded for many years. carlton and United Breweres were bought by Asahi Beverages in 2020.

The company was registered in Canberra on 7 June 1961 and acquired the Penfolds group of wine companies, a business founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. Its subsidiaries included Penfolds Wines Pty Ltd, Penfold Wines (Victoria) Pry Ltd, Dalwood Vineyards Pty Ltd, Warrington's Wine Cafe Ltd, Auldana Ltd, Barossa Vineyards Ltd, Modbury Vineyards Ltd, Australian Motel Industries Ltd. The company and its subsidiaries were acquired by Tooth and Company in November 1976 and the company was delisted on 23 March 1977.

The company was registered in Sydney on 22 June 1962 and acquired Associated Health Foods Pty Ltd. It was acquired by Mauri Brothers and Thomson Limited in November 1973 and continued to operate as a subsidiary company.

The company was registered in New South Wales in September 1925 as The Producers' Co-operative Distributing Society Limited and changed its name to PDS Co-operative Limited in 1975. It was de-registered on 7 May 1983.

The company was incorporated in Victoria on 3 July 1964 as Kejam Pty Ltd and changed its name to Courage Breweries Limited on 30 November 1966. The company changed its name to Courage Australia Pty Ltd in November 1974 and then to Tooth (Victoria) Limited on 13 December 1979. The company, trading as Tooth (Victoria) Limited was deregistered on 22 October 2006.
