Biographical history

The first meeting of Australian university librarians was held in 1928, with the Committee of Australian University Librarians formed in 1965.
In 1992 the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) was established as an unincorporated association and in 1995 the CAUL Office was established at the Australian National University, with Diane Costello as the inaugural Executive Officer.
In 2016 CAUL joined other academic and research library organisations to form the International Alliance of Research Library Associations (IARLA).
In 2017 members voted unanimously in support of the resolution that CAUL become an incorporated association, and in 2018 a review and drafting of a new constitution began, with the new constitution approved in February 2019.
In 2021 CAUL decoupled from the ANU and established its own presence in Canberra as a direct employer.
In 2025 the Council became the Council of Australasian University Librarians with University librarians from Aotearoa New Zealand university libraries officially becoming CAUL Members (rather than Associate Members).
