Biographical history
The Ballarat Trades and Labor Council was first formed in May 1882 as the Eight Hours Anniversary Committee. In June 1883 it was known as the Trades' Hall and Literary Institute and then in November 1886 was known as the Ballarat Trades and Labor Council. The seventh Inter-colonial Trades and Labor Congress of Australasia was held in Ballarat in April 1891.

Copies of a draft scheme of Federation by the Australasian Federation of Labour, submitted by the seventh Intercolonial Trades and Labour Congress to the Labor Councils and Labour Unions of Australasia 1891 and posters relating to Eight-Hour Day celebrations. Other records of the Ballarat Trades and Labour Council including minutes, correspondence and records of Ballarat branches of trade unions now held by the Ballarat Trades and Labour Council.

Ballarat Trades and Labour Council: Minutes of Council (1883 to present) and committees, correspondence, records and photograph relating to the 7th Inter-colonial Trades and Labor Congress of Australasia (1890-1891), financial records and printed material including posters relating to Eight-Hour Day celebrations. Also the records (1930s) of the Ballarat Unemployed Association, the Ballarat Sustenance and Relief Workers' Union, the Ballarat Unemployed Strike Committee, the Ballarat Mothers' Social Club (formerly the Unemployed Mothers' Club), records of the Progressive Political League of Victoria, Ballarat West Branch (1890s), and the Ballarat Branch of the Political Labor Council of Victoria (1911-1913), the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners (1901-1929), the Federated Carters' and Drivers' Industrial Union of Australia (1911-1928), the Federated Clothing and Allied Trades Union of Australia (1917-1930) and the Federated Municipal Employees' Union of Australia (1916-1918), and a memoir by W J McAdam on Ballarat North Railway Workshops, preferential voting and the White Swan Dam project.
