Scope and content
This is a compilation of articles written by Jack Hides and published in 'The Times', London in 1937. The articles were published under the heading, 'Ordeal in Papua' and there were three parts: Part 1 ('Venture into the unknown', 6 October 1937), Part 2 ('Lost in an insane land', 7 October 1937), Part III ('Adrift on a raging flood', 8 October 1937). The articles describe Jack Hides into the last unknown centre of British New Guinea, an expedition into a formidable land that ended in the death of David Lyall, his companion. Hides discovered in 1935 the Tarifuroro Valleys between the Strickland and Purari Rivers. Bound into one volume with the newspaper clippings in a pocket at the back.
