      History

      Robin Cooke was an Australian volcanologist, employed by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR), and seconded to Papua New Guinea at the Rabaul Observatory from 1971 to 1979 as a Senior Government Volcanologist . Cooke and a colleague, Elias Ravian, were were killed on 8 March 1979 by gas eminating from the Karkar volcano, which had been producing low level eruptions from January 1979.
