Australian Dental Association Incorporated

In 1909 the first federation of dental societies was formed as the Australian Dental Association. The following year the Association's name changed to the National Dental Association. At its first meeting in May 1911, delegates represented three societies in New South Wales, two in Victoria and one in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. During 1911-1928 several societies in both New South Wales and Victoria merged. The Association's original title was adopted in August 1927 and a Tasmanian branch was formed in August 1928. The Association was incorporated in the Australian Capital Territory in December 1971.

Armed Forces Federation of Australia

The Armed Forces Federation of Australia was established in order to represent the interests of members of the Australian Defence Force and their families. It was registered in the Australian Capitial Territory and published the journal Viewpoint, also known as ArFFA's viewpoint. The organisation wound up in 2006.

Association for Tertiary Education Management Incorporated

The Association for Tertiary Education Management Inc (ATEM) was founded as the Australian Institute of College Administrators in 1975 originally under the direction of the Caulfield Institute of Technology Administrative Officers Association. Due to considerable interest from other states their focus shifted to the formation of a national organisation. At the first Annual General Meeting of the AICA held on 30 April 1976, the organisation's name was revised to the Australian Institute of Tertiary Education Administrators. In 1996 the organisation's name was changed to the Association for Tertiary Education Management Inc.

Australian Association for Research in Education Incorporated

The Australian Association for Research in Education was founded at the Meeting to Consider the Formation of an Association of Researchers in Education held on 13-14 March 1970 at the office of the Australian Council for Educational Research. Its membership consists of educational researchers in universities, Technical and Further Education (TAFE), schools, educational systems, private consultants and non-profit organisations. The AARE publishes the journal, The Australian Educational Researcher.

Australian Confederation of Operating Room Nurses Limited

This organisation was originally formed as the Australian Confederation of Operating Room Nurses at the first Australasian National Conference for Operating Room Nurses in 1977. In 1978 the inaugural meeting of ACORN was held with each of the six Australian states as member bodies of this national body. In 2000 ACORN became a college and established a Secretariat based in Adelaide. The Australian College of Operating Room Nurses is the peak national perioperative nursing organisation in Australia.

Australian Council of Professions

The Australian Council of Professions was formed on 23 October 1970 at a meeting convened by the New South Wales Council of Professions with representatives of similar councils formed in Victoria, Queensland and South Australia (plus representation by individuals from Western Australia). A constitution for the Council was approved on 12 November 1971. On 16 November 1994 the Council was incorporated as a public company limited by guarantee. At the time of incorporation the then existing Councils of Professions in Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT became Branches of the Council with the NSW Council of Professions opting to retain its autonomy. In 2002 the Council registered the business name Professions Australia in every State and Territory to become officially the Australian Council of Professions Limited trading as Professions Australia. For most purposes the organisation now goes by the name of Professions Australia.

Australian Federation of Air Pilots

The Australian Federation of Air Pilots was originally established as the Australian Institute of Air Pilots and Navigators which then registered as the Australian Air Pilots Association in 1946. The New Guinea Branch was formed in 1947. In 1959 the Association changed its name to AFAP which continues to represent the interests of commercial pilots in all sectors of the Australian aviation industry.

Australian Federation of Business and Professional Women Incorporated

The Australian Federation of Business and Professional Women, now known as BPW Australia, was formed on 8 February 1947 as an umbrella body for the then six existing Business and Professional Women's Clubs in Australia. BPW Australia is affiliated with International Federation of Business and Professional Women (now BPW International).

The Australian Federation of Medical Women was formed in 1927, from existing associations of medical women in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, to promote and develop the formal practice of medicine among women. Internationally AFMW is affiliated with the Medical Women's International Association (MWIA).

Australian Historical Association

The Australian Historical Association was formed at a meeting held on 16 August 1973 and is a national organisation of historians, academics and other professionals working in all fields of history. The AHA awards a range of awards and prizes to new and established historians including the Serle Award and WK Hancock Prize.

Dietitians Association of Australia

The organisation's predecessor, the Australian Association of Dietitians, was registered in the Australian Capital Territory on 5 January 1976. Branches operated in each state and territory encompassing offices that had existed before the formation of the national body. The organisation's name was changed to the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) on 7 May 1983. In September 1994 the DAA passed a by-law to provide for the credential, Accredited Practising Dietitian - available to those dietitians who meet the required criteria. Since 1987, the DAA has published an official peer-reviewed journal, Nutrition and Dietetics. This includes the Journal of Dietitians New Zealand. Prior to this, the Commonwealth Department of Health published the Journal of Food and Nutrition (originally as Food and Nutrition Notes and Reviews in 1944).

Clerk of Works Institute of Australia

The Clerk of Works Institute of Australia was formed in 1958 and incorporated in September 1959. The Institute was formed for professional support of Clerks of Works employed to supervise and inspect major building projects as the representative of the building owner, working directly to the architect. Members of the Institute were also representatives on advisory committees for Building Foreman and Clerk of Works courses at technical colleges. The institute had over 300 members in 1970 and chapters in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. It was deregistered on 20 December 1984.

Institute of Inspectors of Schools of New South Wales

The Institute of Inspectors of Schools of New South Wales was formed in 1918 and its members were inspectors of the New South Wales Education Department. It was affiliated with the Australasian Association of Institutes of Inspectors of Schools, which held biennial conferences for Institutes from Commonwealth states of Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea. By 1983 it became known as the Institute of Inspectors of Schools and Senior Educational Administrators of New South Wales.

Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology Australia New Zealand and South Pacific Division

The ANZSPAC (Australia New Zealand and South Pacific) Division of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) was formed in 1969 as the Institute of Marine Engineers Australia New Zealand Division. The parent organisation, the Institute of Marine Engineers, was founded in London in 1889 and around 2001 adopted a new name as the IMarEST.

Australian Institute of Metals

The Australian Institute of Metals was formed on 26 August 1941 when a number of metallurgy research societies amalgamated, with each society becoming a branch of the Institute. It was incorporated in Victoria on 13 December 1946. On 5 May 1970 the Metallurgical Society of Canterbury affiliated with the AIM and became the New Zealand Institute of Metals Division of the Sydney Branch of the AIM. The Institute changed its name to the Australasian Institute of Metals in January 1976 and again in January 1986 to the Institute of Metals and Materials Australasia. In 1991 the Institute affiliated with the Institution of Engineers, Australis to become its Materials Society. In the late 1990s the Institute became the Institute of Materials Engineering Australasia Ltd.

Steel Treatment Research Society (Australia)

The Steel Treatment Research Society (Australia) was formed in 1931 and held its inaugural meeting on 20 August 1931. The word 'Research' was dropped in the Society's title on 1 July 1935. A new title, the Metals Treatment Society of NSW and a new constitution were adopted on 22 September 1936. The Society amalgamated with other metallurgical societies on 26 August 1941 to form the Sydney branch of the Australian Institute of Metals.

Records Management Association of Australia

The Records Management Association of Australia was established in 1969 and the Victorian Branch, New South Wales Branch and Federal Office were formed in the same year. By 2003, the Association was known as the Records Management Association of Australasia and in 2011 the name was changed to Records and Information Management Professionals Australasia. The Association now represents over 3,000 records and information management professionals with Branches across Australia and New Zealand, as well as a Chapter in Malaysia.

Ergonomics Society of Australia

The society was formed in 1964 as the Ergonomics Society of Australia and New Zealand. On 22 February 1986 at a meeting at Palmerston North, New Zealand, the New Zealand Ergonomics Society was formed. In the same year, the Australian section of the society reformed and changed its name to the Ergonomics Society of Australia. The society changed its name again in December 2003 and is now called Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia Inc.

Royal Astronomical Society

The Royal Astronomical Societ (RAS) was established on 10 March 1820 with the first meeting of the Council and the Society in London. The Society assumed its name on 7 March 1831 after a Royal Charter was signed by William IV. The original objectives of the Society was the promotion of astronomy and geophysics. The Society's three main functions of maintaining a Library, organizing scientific meetings, and publishing journals continues.

Business and Professional Women’s Club of Canberra

The inaugural meeting of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Canberra was held at the Hotel Civic on 9 April 1954. Office bearers elected at the Annual General Meeting on 12 July were President Betty Jackson, Vice-Presidents Mrs Chandler and Kitty Peisley, Secretary Dr M Granger. Other women prominent in the early years were Jean and Isabel Sheaffe, Sister Sylvia Curley, Joan Binns, Heather Shakespeare, and Margaret Timpson (President 1970-1971, 1985). The objectives of the Club were to promote the interests of business and professional women, to raise and maintain standards of education and training of women, and to work for the removal of sex discrimination in remuneration, opportunities for women in employment and selection for office. Representations were made to the government regarding equal pay, equal employment and training opportunities, superannuation, and family law reform. Among speakers to monthly meetings were politicians, diplomats, and academics on current political and international affairs. Meetings also provided opportunities for networking and social activities. The Canberra club also sponsored prizes for nurses, stenographers and book-keepers, and scholarships for young women completing year 10 in secondary school. The Canberra club was initially under the NSW-ACT Division of the Australian Federation of Business and Professional Women, which is affiliated with the International Federation of Business Women, which is associated with the United Nations. A separate ACT Division was formed in 1987 with the original Canberra club and two new clubs in Woden and Belconnen which first met in 1985.

Australian Society of Archivists Incorporated

The Australian Society of Archivists was formed in 1975. Prior to the establishment of the ASA, an Archives Section of the Library Association of Australia had operated since 1951. From 1955 the activities of the Archives Section included the provision of the journal, Archives and Manuscripts. Attempts to establish an archives association included the formation of a Steering Committee in 1958 to investigate and promote an Australian association of archivists, and the Steering Committee formed in 1974 to investigate forming the ASA. At the inaugural meeting of the Society held at the Australian National University in April 1975, a constitution was adopted, provision was made for professional, associate and institutional members, and a council was elected.

Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia

The Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia (APESMA) is the result of the merger between the Association of Professional Engineers Australia (founded 1946, registered 1948), the Association of Professional Scientists Australia (registered 1962) and the Local Government Engineers Association of New South Wales in 1991. The following organisations merged subsequently: Senior Managers (Telstra & Australia Post) Association (1994), ABC Senior Executives Association (1994), Association of Architects of Australia (1995), Salaried Pharmacists Association (1997), Association of Railway Professional Officers of Australia (1997), Australian Collieries' Staff Association (2001), Managers and Professionals Association (2004), Professional Officers' Association (Victoria) (2006) and the Ambulance Managers and Professionals (Victoria) (2010). The organisation was renamed in 2013 as Professionals Australia.

Royal Australian Chemical Institute

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute's (RACI) origins date back to 1917 when it was known as the Australian Chemical Institute (ACI). The ACI was established for the purpose of promoting chemistry, as well as being Australia's qualifying body for professional chemists. Back then it consisted of four State Branches (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria) and had a total founding membership of 400. In 1921/22 the Australian Association of Chemists disbanded and most of its members joined the ACI. In 1923 ACI was incorporated as a public company in New South Wales and in 1932 it was granted a Royal Charter. However, it wasn't until 1953, after a Supplementary Royal Charter, that the Institute changed its name to the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. One of the RACI's goals was to establish national special interest groups which later became known as divisions. Previously these groups were run by the individual RACI branches with little cross-state interaction. To help achieve their goal a Groups Steering Committee was formed in 1964. By 2006 the RACI had 13 Divisions, over 8000 members and a branch in each State and Territory

Safety Engineering Society of Australia

Professional association for the health and safety profession.

The Safety Engineering Society of Australia was formed by a small group of students who enrolled in and attended the first industrial Safety and Accident Prevention course conducted by the (then) Melbourne Technical College in 1948. This group remained together and formed the nucleus of the Safety Engineering Society of Australia and held regular monthly meetings.

Became the Safety Institute of Australia in 1977. Became the Australian Institute of Health and Safety in 2018.
