Subjects include academic staffing and research positions, graduate education, students’ organisations, tertiary education fees, government funding, the University’s budgetary position, a review of the University’s Research Schools (Institute of Advanced Studies) 1976-1982, ANU conferences and seminars 1980-1981, proposed Australian Institute of Development Studies and the development of the University of Papua New Guinea.

Also included are speech notes, invitations and letters of appreciation relating to various functions including conferring of degrees ceremonies and official visits, reports of overseas visits and the Vice-Chancellor’s reports to the Australian National University 1976, 1978, 1979 and 1982.

This collection is of photographs, press cuttings and audiovisual material from the North Australia Research Unit (NARU), an ANU facility located in Darwin. It comprises mostly photographic prints, with some negatives, in five albums, two scrapbooks of material about NARU as well as the Northern Territory generally, and two films taken in 1974 (after Cyclone Tracy) and 1976, along with an audiotape commentary. The photographs range in subject from official visits and fieldwork to social functions, and many are not individually listed.

This series contains interview recordings, transcripts and research papers. They include transcripts of interviews with backbenchers in the Papua New Guinea House of Assembly, 1974; a code book interview schedule and research committee paper; lists of the members of the House of Assembly, 1964-1976; research files and publications.

The interviews were conducted in English, Tok Pisin and Motu; written (typescript) versions are all in English. Most of the interviews were conducted by University of Papua New Guinea students with the interviewers frequently identified in the written version. A memorandum from Gadbois to an (unspecified) research committee provides a rationale for the form of the study.
