Research papers for 'Beyond the Protective State: The Policital Economy of Australia's Manufacturing Industry Policy' by Ann Capling and Brian Galligan, and for his book 'Utah and Queensland Coal' published in 1989 on the acquisition and development of central Queensland coal resources by the US company Utah International. The records include material on the Utah/General Electric merger in 1975 obtained through US Freedom of Information procedures from the United States Department of Justice, Anti-Trust Division, which had investigated the merger, as well as tape recordings, transcripts of interviews, photographs and printed material. Also includes papers of the Committee of Inquiry into the Assets and Public Debt of the Australian Capital Territory, on which Galligan served as a member.

These records were created during the operation of the Goondi Mill from its commencement in 1884 to its closure in 1987. The deposit consists of general letters received 1890-1962, and sent to Head Office 1884-1963; staff and private letters received from Head Office 1890-1963, and sent by Goondi to Head Office 1891-1960; clippings of Technical Field correspondence sent by Head Office to Goondi 1936-1965, copies of Technical Field letters sent to Head Office 1932-1968; copies of cane variety trial reports 1939-1955; engineering notes 1885-1966; chemical inspection notes 1925-1964; manufacture inspection notes 1913-1940; Mill Inspectors notes 1901-1965; correspondence with the Water Quality Council of Queensland; tables showing crop yields 1898-1972; farm production register and farm ownership registers 1931-1987; miscellaneous records re employment of Kanaka labour, World War II war service land settlement scheme; photographs of the mill and staff.

Correspondence, operational reports, crop yield reports, inspection notes, engineers logs, laboratory tables, sketch books (buildings and equipment), photographs, press cuttings, maps and plans, Cane Price Board records, wages books 1914-1928. CSR purchased Hamilton Mill and Estate in 1897, however, the mill had been operating since 1883.

The bulk of these records consist of Head Office correspondence between 1855 and 1947. Until 1947, Head Office outward letters were copied in press copy letter books. Most have detailed indexes, including the inward letters received from 1903. Where gaps exist in the Head Office series, or the material is damaged or fragile it is sometimes possible to locate the same content in the Branch or Mill end of the correspondence.
The deposit also consists of annual reports, share records, New Zealand Sugar Company Limited board minutes, legal documents re lands in Fiji (1885-1970), chemical records, technical reports and data re sugar production, circulars, price lists, photographs (1868-1961) and press cuttings. Items 3619-4100 consist of photographs, series of photographs and albums.
These records contain information on CSR refineries in Australia and New Zealand, raw sugar mills in Australia and Fiji, sugar marketing, distilleries, ocean vessels, pineapple canning in Fiji, the beginnings of the divisions of building materials and industrial chemicals, mining, and defence projects 1939-1945. Also includes correspondence and records of the Australasian Sugar Company, and Robey and Company.
