The manuscript of 'The Structure of Accounting' dated 25 August 1947 was written by Tom Owen and entered in the Commonwealth Institute of Accountants' Accounting Treatise Competition under the pseudonym 'Fontes'. It was awarded a cash prize c. 1949. It was rescued from the fire at the Melbourne Building in April 1953 and is charred at the edges but readable. There are several copies: part 1 is about 69 pages and part 2 135 pages. It has been retained because of its association with the fire.

Volume 1 of his autobiography from the 1940s - 1960s includes: Early memories; Mount Barker 1940 - 1945; Melbourne 1946 - 1955; Melbourne The Australian School of Pacific Administration (ASOPA) 1956; Port Moresby 1956; Manus 1956 - 57; Australian School of Pacific Administration Long Course 1958; Milne Bay District 1959 - 1964.
Volume 2 of his autobiography covers the period from 1964 to his departure from Papua New Guinea in 1978

Papers documenting Max Neutze's involvement with the Victorian Urban Land Council, Canberra Commercial Development Authority and the Australian Population and Immigration Council.

This is a typescript version of Shumack’s memoirs which relate to the early days of Canberra. He lived at ‘Duntroon’ from 1856 and then at ‘Springvale’ in Weetangera from 1866 to 1940. There is additional material such as obituaries, copies of death notices and letters at the back of the volume relating to Shumack, other family members and John Gale (1831–1929), Queanbeyan journalist.

There are two sets of material ( 2 items) in the collection including:
(i) a ringbinder primarily containing a set of genealogical diagrams, and,
(ii) a set of worksheets primarily containing survey plots of garden land use and ownership

There is little or no descriptive documentation attached to either set of records. As far as is known, Meggitt never published the results of this land survey.
The garden land use and ownership survey was conducted in July-September 1960, with tabulation in 1961 (Meggitt 1978: 109-109, and monthly dating on the worksheets).
The survey covers gardens of the Kara clan (at least, and possibly others) at Sari, a location near Wabag, in what was then called the Upper Lai Census Division 12, Enga Province. The genealogical data also appears to be mainly of members of the Kara clan, and was collected and added to between the 1950s and c.1987.
Sari was Meggitt’s main field site between at least 1955 and the 1980s (Meggitt 1957: 161, and personal communication with P Wohlt, who visited Meggitt there in the 1980s-, and T Hays.

NB. These materials, as far as it known, are the only surviving raw field data from Meggitt’s Enga studies, as he destroyed the other materials before his death.

The laboratory notebooks include calculations, notes and designs relating to the High Pressure High Temperature (HPT) apparatus which Paterson developed for research into rock deformation in the Department of Geophysics in the Research School of Physical Sciences (later the Research School of Earth Sciences). There are also log books of assembly notes for thirteen machines built by Paterson Instruments Pty Ltd (later Australian Scientific Instruments Pty Ltd) for overseas research institutes including Manchester University, the University of Montpellier and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and folders of email correspondence with clients and potential clients. The drawings are of the original design and modifications of the HPT apparatus including assembly, modules and components.

The collection includes significant language and genealogical data. The records include research files, letters, journals and diaries compiled by Davis while working as a social anthropologist in Papua New Guinea :-

The research material includes original statistical tabulations from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, questionnaires completed by Queensland schoolchildren, and population projections. There are also agenda papers and minutes of meetings of the Commonwealth Immigration Planning Council and its committees 1966-1975.

There is a master copy and a reference set of the microfiche which was produced by the Department of Political Science. The original collection covered 1952-1978, with some earlier content resulting from personal collections of newspaper cuttings (eg NSW trade unions from 1938). Annual supplements were produced from 1979 to 1992.

The cuttings were taken from The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian, The Canberra Times and The Australian Financial Review, supplemented by The Courier Mail, The Advertiser, The West Australian, The Mercury, The Examiner, The Northern Territory News, and the weekly National Times and The Sunday Mail (Brisbane). Periodically there are cuttings from other country and suburban papers.

The rolls of microfilm include copies of minute books of the Royal Astronomical Society in London (books 1–14) and a signature book, pages 1–114, the last signature being Francis Birch (1903–1992).

There are fifteen reels of microfilm of the plan registry. The first two reels have their own numbering system but the others use an annual single number to identify the plans of ANU buildings and landscaping projects.

Minutes of the Student Representative Council and Executive Committee.

The original signed minutes are bound in three volumes and extend from 4 December 1950 to the last meeting on 23 September 1960. At the end of the third volume there are also minutes of the Board of the Institute of Advanced Studies from 28 October to 2 December 1960. There is a duplicate set of minutes in box 2 for issue to the reading room.

Includes correspondence, insurance papers, reports, financial papers, notebooks, photographs, slides, audio-visual material, publications, annual reports, visitor books, blueprints and architectural plans related to Mount Stromlo Observatory (and its predecessor the Commonwealth Solar Observatory. This includes blueprints and drawings related to the design and construction of various telescopes and equipment at the Mount Stromlo site. The collection includes a large number of records related to the 2003 fire which destroyed much of the observatory and the subsequent insurance claims.

This set of annual reports belonged to Don Faulkner, a Fellow at Mount Stromlo from 1965 and acting Director 1992 - 1993. Included is a list of students 1951 to 1990.

There are a number of versions of booklets and brochures relating to the Mt Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories.

The scores include choral works, including music for poetic works, and works for instrumental ensembles and solo instruments. There are some works written specifically for schools such as those for percussion bands. The music scores are manuscript, commonly on transparent sheets, with printed copies, spiral-bound photocopies, and some published copies.

Natuni was an annual publication for members of Convocation, primarily graduates of the University and current and former staff. Issues held: No 1, Autumn 1980 – No 7, Winter 1988. There is a long gap between issues 5 and 6 with no issues published in 1984–1986.

The negatives of photographs from 1948 to 1969 are held in glassine bags with a similar-sized print (12 x 9 cm). From 1977, the negatives are held as strips in plastic sleeves, with proof sheets, in binders.

The records comprise New Guinea Society papers presented at meetings in Canberra, records relating to membership and activities, correspondence, constitution, minutes and notices of meetings. The collection also includes some documents relating to the Papua and New Guinea Society, a group formed in Port Moresby in 1962.

This series of binders contain typescript pages which may be a manuscript for a proposed publication on international affairs between 1919 and 1948. Each binder appears to contain material for a chapter with later binders including information on dates, notes on books, and transcripts of documents. Item 9 is missing. The last item consists of annotated typescript ‘confidential notes’ about Victorian politicians, public servants and newspapers.

The annual folders include copies of all notices and circulars distributed to residents and staff including notices of meetings and events.

This is the earliest ANU series of official ANU correspondence files. The extant files include the correspondence of Vice-Chancellor Douglas Copland, papers of the Interim Council and Academic Advisory Committee, files about the Easter Conference in 1948 and about individual visitors and staff.

These are recordings and transcripts of interviews with ANU academic and general staff for the 60th anniversary and other history projects.
