Vietnam War; Vietnamese Art

These posters, calendars and artworks were collected over the course of David Marr’s career. There are a mix of prints and originals from the 1930s to the mid 1990s. They largely focus on the Indochina Wars - particularlry the Vietnam War - and the politics of Vietnam during that time but the series also includes art and folk art not specifically related to these topics as well as material focusing on Laos, Cambodia and other regions. The perspectives of the material is mixed, work coming from North and South Vietnam, Europe (mostly France and Russia), Australia and The United States. The series contains examples of propaganda, fine art, children’s art, promotional material for private, not-for-profit and academic organisations and events, educational material, work related to charity and foreign-aid and material discussing war crimes.

Some material in this collection contains accounts of torture and images of injuries.

This series contains the administrative files of the Australian Dictionary of Biography from 1960s-1990s. The files in this series span correspondence (editorial and research); research files; press cuttings and reviews; state and subject working party minutes and correspondence; staff files; Editorial Board files; Ellis dispute files; and copyright/form of signature of authors.

The reports are about research commissioned by the committee on options for calculating tertiary entrance scores in the Australian Capital Territory. They were originally held in two box files and left for safekeeping with the ANU Registrar.

Administration and general staffing of the Division, annual reports, correspondence, minutes, funding and conference papers. Includes records of predecessors the Department of Pacific History, Department of Pacific and Southeast Asian History, and Department of Far East Asian History.

The correspondence is between David Lake and Robert Graves, AD Hope, Bob Brissenden, John Manifold, James McAuley, Judith Wright, Kingsley Amis, Gore Vidal and Dimitris Tsaloumas and mainly relates to poetry.

These records are minutes documenting the Intermediate Awards committee’s decisions and background information to those decisions.

Microfiche copies of newspaper clippings arranged by countries in the Asia, Southeast Asia, and Pacific regions.

Country files include subject matter relating to foreign relations, political process, defence, economy and trade.

Files on Asia include subject matter relating to the Great Powers in Asia, the United Nations, aid, conferences, defence, economy and trade.

Files on world issues include defence, nuclear energy, world aid, economy and trade, Great Powers, environmental problems, resources diplomacy, Antarctica, principles of international relations.

Processing of this series is incomplete.

The minutes are bound in dark blue hardback volumes. Original minutes are typed and signed and there are also duplicate copies of minutes for the period 1952 to 1963.

There are five booklets with essays by Sue Fenwick, Diane Whiteford, Stephen Haswell, Stephen Dodds and Ryl Fardell, published by the Department of Economic History, Faculty of Economics and Commerce.

The files were maintained by Professor Pearce in his role as convenor of the Assessment Committee in conducting the review for the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission. The role of the other members, Professor Enid Campbell (Monash University) and Professor Don Harding (University of NSW) is also documented through regular correspondence.

The collection consists of typed copies of Dr Read’s anthropology lecture notes for the Australian School of Pacific Administration (ASOPA). Also, contains the lecture notes of other academics for ASOPA courses including Marie Reay, Camilla Wedgwood and June Watkins.

The recordings are of undergraduate lectures, public lectures and debates on current issues, addresses delivered at seminars and conferences, readings of literary works including plays and poetry, interviews, and radio programs produced for 2XX. Among the presenters are the 14th Dalai Lama, academics Professor R Johnson, Dr B Rawson, Dr H Kinloch, Professor R Elliot (reading Chaucer), Professor G Sawer, Professor Manning Clark, Professor Ted Ringwood, Professor G Zubrzycki, Professor Robin Gollan and Professor Derek Freeman, Vice-Chancellors Dr HC Coombs and Professor DA Low, politicians Gough Whitlam and Senator Susan Ryan, writers Patrick White and Xavier Herbert, and poets AD Hope, Bob Brissenden, and Rosemary Dobson. Most are on reel-to-reel tapes but some audio cassettes were produced in the period 1984-1986.

The files were maintained in alphabetical order by Dr Susan Bambrick as Master of University House. While some are subject files most are organised by the person, position or body that she corresponded with, and include original correspondence and copies of her correspondence to others.

The mostly annual compilations of correspondence include correspondence to the Master of University House and copies of their replies in chronological order. In earlier years the correspondence is in binders and in later years loose in folders.

This volume has an alphabetical index at the side. Names of people attending University House dinners are noted in the appropriate alphabetical section (by surname or in the case of diplomats, by country) with the dates of the dinners they attended.

The collection includes photographs; video and audio tapes; published papers; research notes, diaries and log books; construction notes and manuals; correspondence and a diorama of the foundations of the Cockcroft Building. The series is not yet processed.

These are copies of minutes and agenda papers in black binders of meetings of the Heads of Research Schools (known colloquially as HORS) within the Institute of Advanced Studies.

This volume contains the original signed minutes of the Professorial Board from its first meeting on 30 September 1969 until 12 April 1989.

The records consist of submissions made by Australian tertiary institutions involved in the teaching of the discipline of engineering, employers of engineers, and members of the public; correspondence relating to submissions and to surveys of employers, students and graduates; and reports by independent assessors on visits to tertiary institutions.

Papers, photographs, slides, field notes made by D'Arcy Ryan in the Mendi Valley, Papua New Guinea, 1954 - 1964 and papers related to his role as a lecturer in anthropology at the University of Western Australia until 1988.

Natuni was an annual publication for members of Convocation, primarily graduates of the University and current and former staff. Issues held: No 1, Autumn 1980 – No 7, Winter 1988. There is a long gap between issues 5 and 6 with no issues published in 1984–1986.

The collection contains material related to the compiling and publishing of the Encyclopaedia of the Australian People. It includes correspondence with the Australian Bicentennial Authority, the ANU Research School of Social Sciences, various immigration and ethnic groups, publishing and marketing arrangements, copyright clearances, Project & Management Committee minutes, annual reports, articles and information submitted by contributors.

This series includes Council minutes, agenda papers and reports of the School of Music before its amalgamation with the Canberra School of Art to become the Canberra Institute of the Arts.

Two files of correspondence between Professor Robert Porter as Director of the John Curtin School of Medical Research and Lady Florey about the Florey Lectures, 1984 exhibition and Memorial Fund. One additional folder of publications relating to Florey Memorial Fund and commemoration of centenary of his birth in September 1998.

Holzknecht studied languages of the Markham family of languages in Papua New Guinea, including the Wampar, Aribwaungg (Yalu), Musom, Labu and Aribwatsa (now extinct) language groups. The collection includes field notes and recordings of the languages including lexus, syntactic lists, grammar outlines, kinship charts and word lists, maps, publications and dictionaries of indigenous languages into German and English. Includes publications in German language.

These files relate to the Canberra School of Music and the Canberra School of Art including the appointment of Directors, their Councils and building requirements and predate their administration by the ACT Government and the Australian National University. Includes Canberra Art School (old Canberra High School) plans and planning brief.

The black binders contain minutes and agenda papers for meetings of the Undergraduate Awards Committee which considered a range of prizes such as the University Medal. There are some gaps and overlaps; in particular no papers for the period mid-1985 to 1986.

This series includes the first edition of the Administrative Guide, a copy of a later Volume II, and a reissue of Volume I in 1987. A copy of Volume I from the 1970s edition has not been located yet. The guide includes information about the governance of the University, procedures for appointment of staff, conditions of service for staff, information about administrative services available, filing and typing instructions, and information about University associations and facilities.

The annual folders include copies of all notices and circulars distributed to residents and staff including notices of meetings and events.

Off-prints and photocopies of articles and papers written by staff and students of the Department of Experimental Pathology are bound into annual volumes, dating from the Department’s establishment.

Contains subject files and newsletters on countries kept by the Division of Pacific and Asian History: Cook Islands, Fiji, Gilbert and Ellis Island, Indonesia, Malaysia, Micronesia, New Caledonia, Papua/New Guinea, New Hebrides (now Vanuatu), New Zealand, Nauru, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tahiti. The submissions by the ANU to the Australian Universities Commission, later the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission, for funding relate to the trienniums 1964-66, 1967-69, 1970-72, 1976-78 and 1988-90.

The papers include addresses made by Crawford from 1933 to 1982, including the Buntine Oration in 1968 and the Sir Robert Garran Oration in 1969. There are medals, degrees and certificates presented to Crawford, and photographs, including albums relating to official overseas visits as Secretary of the Commonwealth Department of Trade and later as adviser to the World Bank. There are also publications relating to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. Some material relates to Crawford's family including personal papers and photographs.

Hal Kendig correspondence files (1981 - 1985), D. Rowland correspondence files (1980-1985), project correspondence, computer printouts of statistical results (1982-1985) with computer coding files included, chapters from the project book, Australian Institute of Multicultural Affairs (AIME) Ethnic Aged Survey 1984. This deposit also holds records of the Adelaide Housing Survey (1977-1979) which was conducted by the ANU Urban Research Unit, a project which Hal Kendig directed.

There is both a rough and final minute book of meetings of the Residents’ Committee for 1968-1970, as well as a Suggestion Book in which residents made suggestions for improvements; these are responded to by the Steward.

1 large box of field data sheets, with codes and reports from a UPNG survey conducted by four teams of students on Normandy and Fergusson Islands in 1986. The survey was undertaken to identify the monetary needs of householders to 'live well' and to establish baseline data for future comparison.

The collection contains research files compiled by Basil Shaw to write a biography on the former Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Michael Somare. The Australian National Time Service at Mount Stromlo Observatory engages in pure research and sends out time signals which are used for the correction of clocks and as a frequency standard for the determination of exact locations in geodetic and cartographic work, as well as for southern ocean navigation. The Time Service researches, primarily, into problems connected with the motions of the earth and their seasonal and occasional determination. The Photographic Zenith Tube (PZT) is an instrument that checks the time by astronomical means, recording the passages of stars close to the zenith. The PZT was brought into regular use at the Mount Stromlo Observatory from March/April 1957. The last plate observed was on 27 August 1985. The records in this series comprise PZT observing data, Positional Astronomy (National Time Service) day books, minutes of meetings, correspondence, subject files, as well as photographs, diagrams and drawings.

Recordings of language data (narratives, myths, wordlists, conversation) and of music from Papua New Guinea, the North Moluccas (Indonesia) and the Solomon Islands.

These records document the decisions and activities of the governing body of the preschool and childcare centre from its inception to 1984. This governing body has gone by various names including Board of Directors and Staff Council.

The summaries are translations into English of articles appearing in ethnic newspapers published in Australia. There are three runs: the 1927-1939 set are from the Italo-Australian Weekly Journal only (item 1), those from mainly 1964 are from newspapers in European languages (items 2-18), and those from 1982-1984 are in European, Arabic and Asian languages (items 19-44). The 1982-1984 set were sent weekly from the Department of Immigration to the Sociology Department in The Faculties at the Australian National University and were then sent on to the Demography Department in the Research School of Social Sciences.

Correspondence, notes and reports on matters concerning the internal governance of the Australian National University created by Professor Low and relating to the more sensitive and confidential matters he had to deal with as Vice-Chancellor from 1975 to 1982.

Subjects include academic staffing and research positions, graduate education, students’ organisations, tertiary education fees, government funding, the University’s budgetary position, a review of the University’s Research Schools (Institute of Advanced Studies) 1976-1982, ANU conferences and seminars 1980-1981, proposed Australian Institute of Development Studies and the development of the University of Papua New Guinea.

This suede-bound volume is a register of higher degrees including honorary degrees: Doctor of Laws, Doctor of Letters, Doctor of Science, Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Arts and Master of Science. It was signed by the recipient of the degree on the day it was conferred. The first few pages include signatures of notable people including politicians, senior public servants and writers. Most of the entries relate to Doctor of Philosophy degrees from 1954 to 1983 which include the person's full name and their signature.

The scores include choral works, including music for poetic works, and works for instrumental ensembles and solo instruments. There are some works written specifically for schools such as those for percussion bands. The music scores are manuscript, commonly on transparent sheets, with printed copies, spiral-bound photocopies, and some published copies.

The series includes cassette tapes of seminars and lectures, reel-to-reel tapes, reels of film, slides and photographs of staff, students and events.The photographs and slides have been placed in an archival album.

This is a collection of folders containing published papers, usually off-prints, written by academic staff of the University.

These files appear to have been assembled for the ANU History Project as early original and duplicated correspondence and reports have been placed in more recent ANU file covers.

This is a master set of press releases which were called ‘For the Press’, ‘Information for News Media’ and ‘Media Releases’ at various times. Most of the annual binders are indexed. The early press releases include a small amount of related correspondence, draft releases, press cuttings, the text of addresses given to special ceremonies and honour citations. Releases for 1999–2000 are not included and there are gaps for 2001–2002.

This is an artificial series consisting of digital copies of photographs provided by staff and students of the University to the Archives and other material such as programs, posters and visitors book.

The collection forms part of the newspaper cutting service run by the Political Science Program, Research School of Social Sciences and consists of cuttings from various Australian and Papua New Guinean newspapers, relating to government and politics in Papua New Guinea. Guide files from 1962-1966 document the early newspaper service and other holdings of the Political Science and International Relations Departments.

The set of posters for each Faculty and for 'student accommodation' with photographs of the campus provide an example of approaches to student recruitment.

The Calendar was published annually for the coming year. Apart from a calendar of principal dates, the contents include: a description of the University and the work of the Departments of the Research Schools, lists of Council and Committee members, academic staff, senior administrative staff, graduates, research students, and members of convocation, legislation, statutes and rules, benefactions, and a list of staff publications. For 1971 (Part 1) and 1973 the publication was called General Information. A duplicate set for general reference use is located in the reading room.

The minutes are of meetings of the Ceremonial and Naming Committee (later, the Naming Committee) which reported to the ANU Council.

The seven notebooks record statistical details of accessions and monograph orders.

Printed maps of Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Western Samoa, New Caledonia (Noumea), Vanuatu and Fiji. The aerial photographs are of Papua New Guinea and Fiji only.

The photographs are mostly of the Australian National University campus, including Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring. There are aerial photographs of the Acton site at different times, and photographs of events and portraits. Many are mounted on board for display purposes.

This is a very miscellaneous collection of papers attributed to Professor Bob Gollan, including material sent to him 'for the Archives' such as Alex Dowling's draft history of the trade union movement in Newcastle and a transcript of an oral history session at a departmental seminar on The Depression.

The research material consists of speeches, articles, statistics and reports, many gathered when Hawkins worked in the Department of Immigration as a research officer. There is a copy of Hawkin's draft Masters thesis on immigration policy and practice, 1942-1949.
