Most of the videos were produced to promote the ANU and its programs at events such as open days. Some are advertisements produced for television advertising in collaboration with other Canberra tertiary institutions.

The Pro-Chancellor’s correspondence covers educational issues, administrative arrangements and invitations and dates from November 1998 to September 1999.

Departmental records re New Guinea Research Unit houses, policy material re New Guinea School Services, reports, handbook and guide, manuals, inventory of research materials, correspondence, photographs of staff and properties in Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea, plans and records relating to the HC Coombs Building.

The records consist of correspondence with the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia (FECCA); material relating to the 1995 Global Cultural Diversity Conference, of which Jupp was a member of the Planning and Steering Committees; correspondence, clippings, research reports, meeting agenda and minutes, and submissions relating to the 1986 Review of Migrant and Multicultural Programs and Services (ROMAMPAS) which Jupp chaired; and meeting agenda papers of the Advisory Council on Multicultural Affairs, of which he was a member.

This series documents the academic progress of an ANU Science student who graduated with First Class Honours and the University Medal in 1998. It includes material from her primary and secondary education, university studies and extracurricular activities, as well as personal correspondence and photographs. There is also material relating to her death and the setting up of the Anjeli Nathan Scholarship and Fund.

In 1997 Papua New Guinea was in the throes of a severe drought with frosts at high altitudes, which severely disrupted food and water supplies. Funded by AusAid, teams of researchers led by the authors, including Papua New Guineans and Papua New Guinea based agriculturalists, conducted field surveys to assess the impact of drought and frost on village food and water supply in all 19 provinces and most districts. The collection includes the field survey data sheets, the Excel database spreadsheet compiled by Joseph Viles, his BA Hons thesis and Bryant Allen's collection of research papers.

'In June 1990, the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau (AIDAB) contracted the Queensland Forest Service (QFS) and the CSIRO, Division of Tropical Crops and Pastures to undertake the Vanuatu Forest Resource Survey Project. The principal aim of the project was 'to contribute to the national objective of the Vanuatu Government to plan and manage the country's forest and agricultural resources in conjunction with appropriate land use development and conservation strategies for the economic benefit of the Vanuatu people'. During the project a geographically-referenced micro-computer based planning tool called the Vanuatu Resource Information System (VANRIS) was developed. VANRIS integrates spatially referenced information for the entire country concerning the type, distribution and current use of the natural resources with population distribution'. Personal records of Gow's life in Papua New Guinea including paper files, film (8mm, 9.5mm and 35mm), photographs and slides, transparencies, paintings and ephemera. Also includes family records. Description of film reels are based on frames at the beginning of each reel and not indicative of the entire content of the film.

There are administrative files maintained by the head of the department and files relating to seminars and conferences, research material of Professor Noel Butlin and Lloyd Robson, and publications including conference proceedings, Working Papers in Economic History nos. 1-197 (no. 72 is missing), and Source Papers in Economic History nos. 1-20.

Diaries and documents (government notices, private letters, newspaper clippings) maintained by Father Kerley during the Bougainville crisis from November 1988 until 1997. The material was collected by Father Kerley at the time or added to later. The hand written diaries (Roman Catholic calendars or diaries used for recording the sacraments - births, deaths and marriages in the rural parishes) are written by him in a kind of code to avoid scrutiny, as he held a position of trust between the waring factions - the Bougainville Revolutionary Army, the 'rascals', the Papua New Guinea Police and external military forces. He has spent many years since transcribing his coded diaries out in full and adding other documents to support his notes.

Almost half of this record group is concerned with PNG. These papers were gathered when Ward was Lecturer in History at the University of Papua New Guinea and adviser to the Land Evaluation and Demarcation Project Study (LEAD). The collection includes correspondence, notes, articles and papers, draft legislation and press cuttings.

A small portion of these papers relate to politics and land matters in Australia, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Africa, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Banaba, French Polynesia and Guadeloupe.

The remainder of the documents are mainly concerned with New Caledonia between 1947 and 1990 and were assembled by Ward at La Trobe University, Melbourne, through the 1980s, particularly during the years of political uncertainty in the French Territory from 1984 to 1990

This series consists of speeches and articles on philosophy and economics by Professor Brennan. One exam paper is included.

This collection is of photographs, press cuttings and audiovisual material from the North Australia Research Unit (NARU), an ANU facility located in Darwin. It comprises mostly photographic prints, with some negatives, in five albums, two scrapbooks of material about NARU as well as the Northern Territory generally, and two films taken in 1974 (after Cyclone Tracy) and 1976, along with an audiotape commentary. The photographs range in subject from official visits and fieldwork to social functions, and many are not individually listed.

This bound set of CUC and ANU exam papers, formerly available for reference in the Menzies Library, contains copies of exam papers sat by Canberra University College and Australian National University undergraduate students in the School of General studies and Faculties of Arts, Science, Law, economics and Oriental studies, later Asian studies.

The four volumes from 1955-1959 contain examination papers for the Canberra University College some of which are labelled University of Melbourne.

The index cards record handwritten summaries of Council and Committee decisions by date of meeting under a subject heading. The cards have columns for date, Council (completed with number of meeting), Committee (name of Committee), paragraph (of minutes) and decisions. There are several sets of cards for common topics: Centres, Committees, Graduate Diplomas, Halls of Residence, Leave, Scholarships, Staff and Students. There are two separate runs in the last box of cards culled from the main run, one of which is early staff appointments. Item 5 is a folder of index card headings.

These are copies of minutes and agenda papers in black binders of the Committee on General Policy convened by the Board of the Institute of Advanced Studies.

This is an artificial collection of records, publications, both printed and audiovisual, and memorabilia associated with the celebration of the University’s fiftieth anniversary in 1996. It was assembled by the Pro-Chancellor Pauline Griffin and Giles Pickford in the Public Affairs Division who were involved in organising the celebrations. The material has been boxed in acid-free document cases and each of these has been treated as an item.

The cassette tapes record Tom Owen reminiscing about his time as Registrar of Canberra University College. There are also copies of recordings of events such as the laying of the foundation stone for the Haydon-Allen building, and the opening of the RG Menzies Building and the Chemistry building, and tapes relating to his early life, the Richmond Hoyts Cinema, and oral histories recorded in the 1990s. Some tapes are annotated with file references 14.1.0.83-14.1.0.92 (ANUA 53).

The original signed and bound minutes and agenda papers of the Finance Committee of Council are in boxes 1-7. Duplicates are held for 1946-1963 and 1995-1996 in boxes 8-10.

Video material created and collected by the Instructional Resources Unit (IRU) for teaching and other ANU uses such as 1) promotional, e.g. University Open Days, student activities and campus life, facilities and study requirements for students, etc., 2) official visits and events, e.g. conferring of degrees ceremonies, the 14th Dalai Lama’s visit, etc., 3) interviews - Professor AD Hope; Professor Manning Clark; Dr HC Coombs; Emeritus Professor Oscar Spate; Sir John Eccles; British social anthropologist, Sir Edmund Leach, etc., 4) lectures and public addresses - Research School of Physical Sciences, Department of Zoology and a series of Twilight Lectures presented by the ANU and the National Aquarium, 5) commissions and contracts e.g. Questacon, Canberra College of Advanced Education, 1990 Floriade Festival, NSW Chamber of Mines Metals and Extractive Industries, Commonwealth Environment Protection Agency, etc., 6) commissions by ANU Departments, often recorded in the field, e.g. Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories; fossil locations in the Gogo area of the Kimberleys; Department of Forestry student field trips; the freshwater and wetland ecology of Iron Bark Creek, etc. At the time of the IRU’s closure, Departments were contacted and encouraged to claim any items which they considered to be of value and for which they had an ongoing use. This explains some of the gaps in the collection.

The binders contain typed research notes prepared for the writing of the 50th anniversary history of the University by Stephen Foster and Margaret Varghese. There are often copies of source material (correspondence or other documents) attached to the notes. The dates listed against each folder on the item list refer to the period of time covered by the notes rather than their date of creation – there is material dated from 1904 included.

These are recordings and transcripts of interviews with ANU academic and general staff for the 60th anniversary and other history projects.

The collection consists of manuscripts and old prints collected in Malaita by Fr Donatien Coicaud and Fr Christian Kamphuis. Includes Stories (Histoires) as language word lists, exercise books, prayer books, dictionaries, biblical material, and printed material.

These research files were compiled by project staff preparing the 50th anniversary history of the University. There is a run of ‘person’ files, source files and general files containing original records, notes and drafts, as well as notebooks, working files for each chapter and files about the publication.

The original typewritten signed minutes are bound in dark blue hardback volumes. For the period 1951 to 1963 there are both originals (Box 1) and a duplicate unsigned set (Box 2).

The publications include a report on the 1962 explosion and Fire in the Belly, a fiftieth anniversary history, by T Ophel and J Jenkin.

Research papers and newspaper clippings mainly relating to France's role in the Pacific Islands. Countries include New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna, French Polynesia and Tahiti.

The visitor’s guides were originally booklets but then became leaflets in which the campus map is the dominant feature. There are also some leaflets about artworks, buildings and trees on campus.

This series contains copies of the Humanities Research Centre Bulletin (1975 - 1980) and brochures called The Humanities Research Centre: A Description (1978 - 1995).

The earliest files in this series relate to the Canberra School of Music and the Canberra School of Art. From 1987 the files relate to the Canberra Institute of the Arts, an amalgamation of the Schools. In 1992 the Institute transferred from the ACT Government to become part of the Australian National University. The series includes minutes of meetings of the Councils or Boards for all these bodies and files about graduation ceremonies, celebrations and donations.

These are copies of the minutes and agenda papers for meetings of the Advisers on Legislation.

This is an artificial series of significant papers relating to the development of the University. There are binders of 'Basic Papers', Interim Council records and the 1948 Conference papers, as well as later reviews of the School of General Studies and other reviews and reports.

The publications include issues of Studies in Demography, Industrial Relations Papers and publications about the Botany Bay project.

Most of the papers relate to the Synroc project: correspondence, reports, and submissions 1978–90. There are also papers relating to the history of the Research School of Earth Sciences, the 1991 review of the Institute of Advanced Studies, and papers relating to Ringwood’s membership of the CRA Scientific Advisory Board 1981–1993.

The publications include reports of the Computing Policy Committee.

The minutes are in the form of the Manager’s working files and cover the period 1980–1991 for the ANU Press Management Committee and the later Division of Publishing and Printing Management Committee and the ANU Press Editorial Committee. The subject and author files date mainly from 1984 when Permagon Press bought the ANU Press and had a representative on campus. The subject files cover submission, adoption and rejection of manuscripts, editing and graphic design, distribution, promotion and sales. Author files include biographical information, reviews, negotiations, contracts and royalty payments.

These are the original signed minutes and agenda papers of the Building and Grounds Committee (known as the Advisers on Buildings and Grounds from August 1951 to October 1960). There is a gap between 7 April 1989 and 20 March 1992 when the Committee is said to be ‘re-established’. There are duplicate copies for the period 1947–1970 and copies of minutes of joint meetings between the Advisers on Building and Grounds and the Board of Graduate Studies’ Site Development Committee 1954–1957 in boxes 4–5.

Some records relate to the Australian Universities Commission, including reports of visits to other universities and minutes 1959-1967. Boxes 1-7 (Items 1 - 84) are Pacific research papers, unpublished papers, and publications on rural development, economics and labour in Papua New Guinea. Includes reports of Board of Inquiry on rural wages and related matters (1970), theses, and maps. A small number of publications on Fiji, Samoa and the Torres Strait.
Boxes 8 - 16 (Items 85 - 101) are objects from Ric Shand's collection.
Boxes 17 - 30 were added to the collection in 2017 and relate to Shand's work on the economic development of India. The archive was created for a publication but he died before it was written up. There are indexes to the contents of these boxes in the shared drive, and also a printed index in Box 17, but no item listing.

There is a master copy and a reference set of the microfiche which was produced by the Department of Political Science. The original collection covered 1952-1978, with some earlier content resulting from personal collections of newspaper cuttings (eg NSW trade unions from 1938). Annual supplements were produced from 1979 to 1992.

The cuttings were taken from The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian, The Canberra Times and The Australian Financial Review, supplemented by The Courier Mail, The Advertiser, The West Australian, The Mercury, The Examiner, The Northern Territory News, and the weekly National Times and The Sunday Mail (Brisbane). Periodically there are cuttings from other country and suburban papers.

These three binders include reports of review committees and comments by Faculty Boards on them for reviews of Research Schools and departments and centres within Research Schools.

The papers cover John Ballard’s political research in the Pacific Islands of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Micronesia and Fiji. The majority of the collection is focused on Papua New Guinea where John Ballard was involved with the development of the political system leading up to and following independence in 1975. The papers also concern the Public Service administration courses John Ballard taught at the University of Papua New Guinea. There are a number of government related papers for the Pacific Islands.

The original typed minutes of meetings of the Board, signed by the Master of University House as Chairman, are pasted into binders. From 16 December 1986, the minutes of the Management Committee are also included. There is one hard-bound volume of duplicate minutes for 1953-1958.

Research papers for 'Beyond the Protective State: The Policital Economy of Australia's Manufacturing Industry Policy' by Ann Capling and Brian Galligan, and for his book 'Utah and Queensland Coal' published in 1989 on the acquisition and development of central Queensland coal resources by the US company Utah International. The records include material on the Utah/General Electric merger in 1975 obtained through US Freedom of Information procedures from the United States Department of Justice, Anti-Trust Division, which had investigated the merger, as well as tape recordings, transcripts of interviews, photographs and printed material. Also includes papers of the Committee of Inquiry into the Assets and Public Debt of the Australian Capital Territory, on which Galligan served as a member.

These are original minutes and agenda papers in black binders of the committee responsible for the management of the University’s Kioloa campus on the south coast of New South Wales.

The photograph album was compiled by Tony Argyle and Tony Howkins at the time of the Department of Zoology's 'reunion and wake' in late 1990 before its amalgamation with the Department of Botany. Its contents date from 1959 and include photographs of buildings and building works, staff and students (groups and individuals), vehicles, equipment, field trips and social events, as well as documents relating to Tony Argyle's employment, accident reports, extracts from the ANU Reporter, poetry, quizzes, programs and addresses. The drawing on the cover (the word Zoology spelt out in animals) is by Richard (Dick) Barwick. Loose photographs and documents are in a separate folder. Also included is the memoir, "Smyth's Department: Memories of the Department of Zoology, 1958 to 1971".
