Dalgety and Company Limited was registered in London on 29 April 1884. The company was a joint-stock company incorporating firms which were actively managed by Frederick Gonnerman Dalgety in partnership with other trading individuals. Dalgety became the company's first chairman of directors and remained the largest shareholder until his death. Australian branches were opened in Perth (1889), Albany (1890), Rockhampton (1891), Brisbane (1894), Townsville (1896), Adelaide (1897), Albury (1908), Wagga (1923) and sub-branches in smaller centres. A Superintendent was appointed for New Zealand in 1908 and for Australia in 1914. From 1884 to the Second World War, the company operated as merchants in rural areas, wool brokers, stock and station and shipping agents in Australia and New Zealand. In 1927 Dalgety and Co Ltd acquired the business of W C Hunter in Kenya. On 22 November 1961 the company merged with the New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Agency Company Limited to form Dalgety & New Zealand Loan Limited.

In September 1961, Dalgety and Company Limited announced it proposed to merge with the New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Agency Company Limited. Dalgety and New Zealand Loan Limited was formed on 22 November 1961 after the name change was approved by the company's shareholders. The company's interests in its Kenyan and East African venture was sold in 1969. A new company name, Dalgety Limited, was adopted on 30 June 1970 and branch operations in Australia and New Zealand were transferred locally incorporated subsidiaries Dalgety Australia Limited and Dalgety New Zealand Limited.

Biographical history
Edward Willis van Senden was born in London on 23 May 1863. He studied wool classing in France and was assistant-buyer to Paul Pierrard of Rheims and London 1871-81. He came to Adelaide in September 1881 and conducted the wool buying for Elder Smith & Co Limited until 1883 when he began his own business which extended to wool buying in New Zealand by 1888. In 1895 he acquired the business of John Grice & Co which he sold to Dalgety and Co Ltd in 1900 and became general manager of their Adelaide Branch. In 1907 van Senden was Consular Agent for France in Adelaide, a position he held until July 1908. van Senden died in January 1918.

This deposit consists of records of E W van Senden prior to and during his appointment as manager of Dalgety and Co Limited: Personal letters from his fiancee, banks, clients, the Hon George Riddoch, relatives etc; business letters, negotiations and documents re the transfer of his business concerns to Dalgetys, share certificates, company prospectus, diaries, receipts, cash books, legders and plans (1887-1917). Papers in French relating to his office as Consular Agent for France in Adelaide: correspondence with thte French Consul General in Sydney, letters and documents received re: shipping, passenger lists of French ships "Australien", "Ville de la Ciotat", and "Caledonieu" (1907-1908), trade, requests for information, letters from James Page former Consular Agent, and information on accounts (1907-08). Branch records: Minutes of Local Board of Advice (1906-17), letters recieved till 1912 and later correspondence of Adelaide managers (1897-1966), superintendent's monthly returns (1919-29), working papers for returns (1948-49), managers' reports to Head Office (1907-60), Stock Department reports (1931-41), financial documents (1897-1960), taxation returns records (1913-61), registers of properties, profits & loss, salaries, deeds, securities and signatures (1900-54), managers' diaries (1901-04), press cuttings (1928-33), annual reports of Dalgety and Co Ltd (1897, 1899, 1902-13), annual reports of other companies, and a small number of prints, photographs and plans.
